Patient-Reported Effects of GLP-1s on Endometriosis Symptoms
Date: 2026-08-19
GLP-1 medications have gained significant attention in recent years for their use in the treatment of diabetes and obesity. Now, an emerging conversation is taking place around their potential effects on symptoms experienced by people living with endometriosis.

Dr. Danielle Luciano, EndoRISE Co-director, recently joined NBC Connecticut to discuss this developing topic and what patients are reporting.

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease that can present very differently from person to person. Symptoms may include pelvic pain, painful periods, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, and other effects that can significantly impact quality of life. Recent research continues to underscore just how varied and multisystemic the experience of endometriosis can be.

At the same time, some patients taking GLP-1 medications for approved indications such as diabetes or weight management have begun reporting changes in their endometriosis symptoms. These observations have generated interest in whether GLP-1 medications or the metabolic, inflammatory, hormonal, and weight-related changes associated with their use could influence symptoms experienced by people with endometriosis.

Importantly, GLP-1 medications are not currently established or approved treatments for endometriosis. While patient experiences can help identify important questions for researchers to investigate, more research is needed to understand whether there is a direct relationship between GLP-1 medications and endometriosis symptoms, which patients might experience changes, and the biological mechanisms that could potentially be involved. Current evidence-based pharmacologic treatments for endometriosis-related pain remain focused on established hormonal and other therapeutic approaches rather than GLP-1 medications.

For EndoRISE, conversations like these highlight the importance of listening to patient experiences and using those observations to help generate new scientific questions and research. Patient-reported changes can provide valuable clues about areas that warrant further investigation and may ultimately contribute to a better understanding of the complex biological pathways involved in endometriosis.

Watch Dr. Danielle Luciano’s conversation with NBC Connecticut to learn more about what patients are reporting, what researchers currently know, and the questions that still need to be answered as this emerging area continues to develop.
